A Proverbs-Guided School

The most important text book at our School is the Bible because it governs how we do everything. Of all its books, one we often use and really love is Proverbs. We know that contained in this book is the path of wisdom; the path we are attempting to follow in life.  It is a book that teaches us how to follow Jesus and to keep God’s Law and so we go back to it time and time again.

Proverbs has a lot to do with education as clearly evidenced in these examples:

Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 9:9-10
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,

And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Proverbs 13:20
He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will be destroyed.

Proverbs 14:15
The simple believes every word,
But the prudent considers well his steps.

Proverbs 16:16
How much better to get wisdom than gold!
And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.

Proverbs 18:15
The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge,
And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Every Wednesday begins with a story about a particular proverb which teaches us how to implement it into our lives. In fact, at the time of writing, Mrs. Stewart is teaching the pupils about Proverbs 10:26: “As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him.

We have also memorised large portions of this book of wisdom. In our first year at Sunrise we memorised Proverbs 1:1-7; this year we have learned Proverbs 3:1-10.

What our nation urgently needs is surely the same as what our pupils need: Biblical wisdom. That is why we are a Proverbs-guided school.
