Our Teacher's Reflections on Our First Year

The following is adapted from the Teacher’s Report given at the recent AGM.

As we look back upon the year, we should do so with a sense of profound gratitude to God. Scripture plainly teaches that children are to be taught to honour God in all their ways, and so we are convinced of Christian Education. But just because something is the right thing to do, does not mean that it is an easy thing. There is a cost to be counted, and yet, in keeping God’s commands there is great reward.

As a teacher, spending so much time with the children, there are many things for which I am thankful. The children have been saturated in the Word of God and particularly in the Gospel. The Word of God has been upon their lips, so that out of the mouths of infants and babes God has ordained strength.

There are various and growing evidences that God is at work in these children’s lives. There is a clear articulation of key Gospel truths and that in a deepening measure. The pupils can express points of doctrine with increasing confidence. Their heart attitude is one of love towards the brothers, and one of compassion for those who are lost. To see these things on display in a School in this land is surely something to be thankful for.

The pupils have done a fantastic job in memorising their Bible verses and Catechism. They have learned Colossians 1:13-20, Romans 5:1-7, Genesis 1:1-13, Exodus 15:1-6, Proverbs 1:1-7, and also many Psalms that have been learned through song. We often sing a portion from Psalm 119 that reminds us why we memorise Scripture – Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee.

The children have done exceptionally well with their catechism and have appreciated all the positive feedback from those on Facebook. Increasingly they are being able to use the catechism to make connections with what they are learning. If they understand doctrine now, they are less likely to be tossed to and fro by every wave of incorrect teaching.

It is a particular joy of mine to be able to have a lesson turn surprisingly towards a discussion of God. Perhaps in History, a child will talk about God being in control, or in Geography when there is sympathy expressed for nations that don’t know Jesus, or in English when learning about adjectives leads to a discussion of the attributes of God. Also to hear discussions of how knowledge can be used to bless others, to help others, to honour God’s name, is very special.

We don’t need to speak against the public schools when such are the everyday benefits in Christian Schools.

There is so much more that could be said, but let me just encourage you to continue to support the School.

  1. By your prayer. Not just your personal prayer but also of your church fellowships. These prayers have been answered by our great God through this year, but continue to pray.
  2. By giving. Some can give money, some can give time to be classroom assistants, and some can give resources. Perhaps you have old phones around your house; donate them to the School so that we can get an iPad.
  3. By speaking. Could you speak about the school to potential parents? Could you encourage more people to take an active interest in the School? Could you invite your friends to like the Facebook page? Would you be interested in running your own fundraising evening for the School to help raise awareness?
